Time and space

This year sees the tenth anniversary of the course I have the pleasure of teaching on at Swansea College of Art. The BA(Hons) MDes Advertising and Brand Design course was founded in 2006 and wowzers, a lot has changed in the communications industry since then.

Facebook was two, Twitter wasn’t even an egg, emoji’s were 🙁 and mobile was, well … just mobile. Now we live a multi-screened, multi-connected, multi-disciplined, multiple-choice, 24/7 existence. We don’t just consume content – we create it. And brands don’t just speak to us, hell no, we give it straight back to them. There is no doubt the plethora of platforms available nowadays means simple communication is now a complex affair. With this in mind I like to think that the course I teach on has stayed relevant throughout the years. However, the only real testimony to this is our graduates and the work they do.

So luckily, our tenth birthday is not going to pass unnoticed as our alumni are returning to celebrate with us on Friday 6th May for our 10th Anniversary Reunion. Then we’ll hear first hand of their adventures into the professional world. This, in all reality, will be the measure of our courses’ success.

Our wonderful alumni are coming from all over the country – from digital businesses, ad agencies, design consultancies, marketing departments, social media outfits, startups, kickstarters, and we’ve also invited a few firestarters. It should be a bang tidy gig.

Afterwards our third year cohort are holding their final year exhibition entitled Rum & Raspberry. The exhibition starts at 6pm in the UWTSD Alex campus on Alexandra Road, Swansea and is also open on the 7th May. It then joins the Swansea College of Art Summer Shows from 21st May to 3rd June. All are welcome.
